Our kindergarten students learn coding using "BeeBot" robots. Their first task was to get the BeeBot from one blue line to the next blue line. They had to figure out how many "forward" cards to use to complete this task. Working in groups, students created the program to make the BeeBot travel around a square. To complete the activity they used forward, right turn, left turn, clear and go commands.
First through fifth graders learned paper programming before moving to the computer to write code. The activities on code.org teach students how to sequence, give clear direction, and problem solve. Students work up to evaluating programs to see where they will fail and then fix the programs so they will work successfully.
