Student Structural Engineers
Globe Stand Challenge Cooper's 3rd graders learn about the continents and oceans. One activity they love is making a globe that hangs from the ceiling. Due to fire codes they are not able to hang the globes. This year their engineering challenge was to design a structure 30 cm tall that will hold their globe for five days. Teachers were able to assess how well the students learned the location of the continents. Students demonstrated their ability to measure in metric units. The classroom was filled with discussion about ways to help structures stand, the characteristics of materials, and the best method for hanging the globes. |

Student Aerospace Engineers
As students learn about the roles and duties of an aerospace engineer, they will develop and apply the skills needed to conduct scientific investigations. Identifying and using the correct tools of measurement are the skills needed to design, build and test rockets. Reporting the data collected when testing rockets provides students with an opportunity to utilize their language arts skills. |
