Our second grade students were learning about weathering (breaking things down) and erosion (moving the sediment). Students were to create a farm trying to keep the soil in and not blow away.
Students also had the opportunity to learn about two ways of growing. We discussed and planted plants in a traditional manner with soil and pots, as well as introduced hydroponics. |
ShieldingSome students thought keeping the soil in meant to have walls surrounding the farm.
|
FencesMany students thought the way to prevent erosion was to use fences to keep the soil from blowing away .

BarriersFinally, a few groups found that after their "testing" the best idea was to use barriers. Later we discussed how plants and and certain crops are used as barriers certain years rather than for growing.
