Engineering Camp Highlights
Visit from the AIAA NASA Engineers
Mr. Brandon and his team of AIAA engineers visited with the older campers to teach them about launching rockets.
The campers made a rocket using straws, rubber bands, and index cards. With a partner, the campers launched their rockets at different angles to see if the angle would change the trajectory and the distance that the rocket flew.

Mrs. Greer's Furry Experiment
The younger campers tried out some new equipment with Mrs. Greer from Hampton City Schools' science department. The campers completed an investigation that helped them test to see if the color of an animal's fur affected the body temperature. Students wrapped a water bottle with the fur from a bear, fox, coyote, and a few other animals. Rubber bands were used to hold the fur in place. The water bottles were carried outside and placed in the sun. Then the students inserted the temperature probe from the Sparks computer to record the temperature.
As the students waited for the bottles to heat up, Mrs. Greer took them on a scavenger hunt to find camouflaged animals hidden near Cooper's outdoor classroom.
When the campers returned from their hunt the temperatures of the animals were read. What did they find out? The animals with darker fur had a warmer temperature than the animals with lighter fur.

Sandy Bottom Nature Center Field Trip
Our first field trip was to Sandy Bottom. The campers participated in several activities:
*Paddle Boating
*Crafts
*Nature Walk
*Cooking
The Cross Country Team from Kecoughtan High School suppled the leg power needed to move the paddle boats through the lake.

Engineering Projects with Mrs. Harper-NeelyEveryone loves Legos. All campers worked on a Lego project using the kits purchased by Star Achiever's YMCA. Mrs. Harper-Neely introduced to the older students the First Lego League competition materials. This year Cooper would like to have a team compete in Norfolk.

Healthy Cooking With Ms. PittWho doesn't like a good snack? Mrs. Pitt showed students how to create delicious snacks that they can make with little to no help from adults. Our campers practiced reading and following recipes.
